Curzon was one of the great administrators of the British empire in India. He is credited with stabilizing the finances between the government and the provinces and instituting numerous reforms. The first volume of his work details the history and nature of the various government houses in Calcutta, and the second volume narrates the stories of the various rulers who have lived there; he predicts in his preface that the subject matter of this second volume would appeal to a Òwider audience.

This is a very beautifully presented book, elegantly written, an attractive portrayal of trip to Kashmir, illustrated after the paintings of Abanindro Nath Tagore, Mrs Sultan Ahmad, Miss Hadenfelt and Colonel Strahan, and from photographs, largely taken by the author.

Osmaston arrived in India in 1888, bagging his first tiger near Mundali, he spent much of his career as a forest officer in various regions and recounts numerous encounters with big game much of the book is related to the birds and fauna of India.
